Welcome to the world of cleanroom! In these highly controlled environments, even the smallest particle can interfere with product integrity and process outcomes. This is where cleanroom wipers come into play—a primary tool for maintaining cleanliness without disrupting the controlled environment.
Cleanroom wipers are among the most effective tools for keeping surfaces free from microscopic contamination, and they're available in various sizes (like 4"x4", 6"x6", 9"x9", 12"x12", and 18"x18"). The material they're made from—polyester, poly-cellulose, microfiber, cotton, or nylon—determines the wiper's effectiveness for specific tasks. Additionally, the edge treatment (such as knife cut, laser seal, ultrasonic seal, or pressure heat seal) is selected to meet the cleanliness standards of different cleanroom classes.
Maintaining surface cleanliness requires precision, as most contaminants are invisible to the naked eye. The Institute of Environmental Sciences and Technology (IEST) suggests folding the wiper into quarters (half, then half again), creating eight surfaces for efficient cleaning.
When wiping, start from the cleanest area and move toward the dirtiest, applying consistent, gentle pressure. After each pass, switch to a new fold to avoid spreading contamination, and use parallel, overlapping strokes. If you encounter stubborn residues, a pre-saturated wiper with an approved cleaning solution can help. Always wipe in a single direction to prevent cross-contamination, and promptly dispose of used wipers.
For specialized cleaning, like cart wheels or small crevices, follow your facility's standard operating procedures (SOPs), which may cover these unique areas in detail.
Selecting the right wiper size depends on the surface area you're cleaning:
Small Surfaces: Use swabs or small wipers for intricate equipment or tight spaces.
Medium Surfaces: For areas like cart wheels, medium-sized wipers are efficient.
Large Surfaces: For tables and workstations, large wipers cover the area quickly and effectively. A common choice for general surface cleaning is the 9"x9" wiper, as it can be folded to fit comfortably in your hand and provides optimal cleaning surface.
Choosing between dry and pre-saturated wipers depends on the cleaning task:
Dry Wipers: Ideal for quick clean-ups, such as spills or for areas around wet processes where you need a quick solution.
Pre-saturated Wipers: For high-frequency cleaning of large surfaces, pre-saturated wipers save time and effort by delivering a consistent amount of cleaning solution with each use. These wipers also eliminate the need to handle liquid cleaning solutions directly, which is especially helpful when hazardous chemicals are involved.
Using the correct wiper, size, and cleaning technique preserves the cleanliness and efficiency of the cleanroom. The right approach prevents contamination, improves process yields, and supports compliance with industry standards. So, choose your wiper thoughtfully and follow proper techniques for the best results.
By mastering these practices, you'll play a key role in maintaining the cleanroom's environment—an essential contribution to the success of your facility!
